The four Geneva Conventions of 1949 and three Additional Protocols represent the core of modern international humanitarian law. It is through these laws that the International Committee of the Red Cross and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has gained acceptance as impartial humanitarian organizations with the right to carry out relief activities for victims of armed conflicts. Nation signatories to the Geneva Conventions and Protocols recognize the right of the ICRC to intervene on behalf of wounded, sick, and shipwrecked; prisoners of war; and civilians in conflict areas. The ICRC works with all sides of a conflict to get access to POWs and detainees and providing humanitarian assistance to civilians.
